Plan Your Visit

Climbing 1,200 steps in the tropical heat requires preparation. Here is everything you need to know to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey to the Palace in the Sky.

The Best Time to Go

The ideal time to start your ascent is either very early in the morning (around 7:00 AM as the gates open) or late in the afternoon (around 3:30 PM). This helps you avoid the intense midday sun and the massive crowds of tour groups that typically arrive around 10:00 AM. A complete visit takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.

What to Wear

Dress comfortably for high heat and humidity. Lightweight, breathable cotton or linen clothing is highly recommended. Because the climb involves steep, uneven stone steps and metal staircases, sturdy walking shoes or sneakers are mandatory - avoid flip-flops. Unlike temples, there is no strict dress code for covering shoulders or knees at Sigiriya.

What to Bring

Carry a large bottle of water - there are no shops past the main entrance gates. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential. If visiting during the monsoon season (October to December), a light raincoat is advisable. Beware of the monkeys; do not carry loose food or plastic bags that they might snatch.
